Vitamin D Supplements Can Make Your Life Longer

The new discovery is somewhat considered to be an anomaly. This is because until nowadays the benefits of vitamin supplements remained uncertain. Although vitamin D is often praised as a great mean of decreasing the growth of cancer cells and a mean of reducing the risk of heart disease development, several studies contradicted the effects of the vitamin on these conditions.

The results of prior research showed that multivitamin supplements really have no effect on reducing the risk of cancer. However, can prove that vitamin D might be an exception.

The lead researcher of the study, Dr. Philippe Autier, from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, located in Lyon, France, said that this is the first study that was able to give an example vitamin D impact on mortality. “If you want to increase your vitamin D intake by taking supplements, it looks like a great idea” he added.

Together with his colleague Sara Gandini, from the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy, Dr. Philippe Autier analyzed the data from 18 trials, in which more than 57,000 people took part. Doses of vitamin D, given to the participants, varied from 300 to 2,000 international units (IUs). The average dose was 528 IUs.

The follow-up study, performed six years later 4,777 of the people involved in the studies died.

Researchers found that participants who took vitamin D supplements had a 7 percent lowered risk of death if compared to patients who did not take the supplements.

Nine of the tests gathered blood samples. The results showed that participants who took the supplements had an increased level of vitamin D in their blood than the subjects who did not intake vitamin D supplements.

The findings of the new study might lead to the creation of new drugs able to fight cancer, as well as other serious diseases, Dr. Philippe Autier mentioned. Vitamin D is able to decrease the growth of cancer cells.

The lead researcher believes that people should receive a daily dose of vitamin D supplements between 400 and 600 IUs. “There is no need to take more - that’s crazy. You have to be careful not to take a dose that’s too high” he mentioned.

Taking a moderate amount of sunbaths is important for your bones, because the skin uses the light from the sun for producing its own vitamin D.
